Delivering Bad News Training Through Simulated Family Application

The 'Simulated Patient Laboratory', established at our Faculty in 2019, launched 'Simulated Patient Applications' with the employment of simulated patients after the pandemic. In line with student feedback, 'Delivering Bad News' training was added to the Emergency Medicine internship program for students in the Family Medicine rotation through the collaborative work of the Emergency Medicine and Medical Education and Informatics departments.

Students are asked to deliver the news of their relatives' deaths to a 'Simulated Family' consisting of four simulated patients in accordance with the SPIKES approach. In the training, information is provided first through a briefing, and then the consultation is conducted. After the consultation, feedback and debriefing sessions are held. The training, which was evaluated by students as very beneficial, continues with ongoing improvements.
