Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Physical medicine and Rehabilitation (Physiatry) is a branch of medicine which handles with the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal system diseases. In addition, it is the branch of medicine that applies rehabilitation in order to maximize the current capacities of people with physiological or anatomical disabilities due to congenital or acquired diseases of all other systems, to reduce their dependence on others and to improve their quality of life.

            Suleyman Demirel University Medical School Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation was established on January 23, 1996. In our department, there are still two Professors, one MD Faculty Member and eight research assistants. Since its establishment, our clinic has trained over thirty medical and rehabilitation specialists (physiatrists).

            The inpatient service of our department, which has a capacity of 31 beds, is located on the second and third floors of the Radiation Oncology building next to the Main Hospital building. Due to the pandemic conditions, our patients who are hospitalized on the third floor are temporarily hospitalized on the fourth floor of the main building. Our outpatient clinics serve as two general and two follow-up polyclinics (Hand rehabilitation, Rheumatology and Osteoporosis) in the 6. (sixth) corridor of the Outpatient Clinics building.

            Inpatient physical therapy and rehabilitation practices are carried out in the treatment room on the first floor of the service, and in the treatment room on the ground floor of the Main Hospital building for outpatients. There is a Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Unit and an Isokinetic System unit on the ground floor of the Radiation Oncology building for the rehabilitation of heart and lung patients. Ten physiotherapists, 4 physiotherapy technicians and nine nurses work in our department.

EDUCATION

Students

            The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Internship is available in Term V and the curriculum has been prepared in line with the National Core Education program. Students are obliged to fill in a report card containing musculoskeletal examinations during their internship. On the last day of the internship, students take the musculoskeletal examination practical exam and then the theoretical exam.

Postgraduate Residency

            Our department was accredited in the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialization Branch by the Turkish Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Association Qualification Board on January 23, 2015 and was entitled to receive the 'Certificate of Competence'. Our specialization training is carried out in line with the Medical Specialization Board (TUK) Curriculum Formation and Standard Setting System, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialization Training Core Education Curriculum.

            Research assistants work in the service, general and private outpatiet clinics in line with their seniority, attend the visits of the faculty members and carry out the consultation services of other clinics. They also work in Internal Medicine Department for 4 months, in Neurology Department for 2 months, in Cardiology Department for 1 month, in Pulmonary Diseases Department for 1 month and in Orthopeadics and Traumatology Department for 1 month.

            Each research assistant prepares 2 seminars and 2 literature presentations, one for each semester. Seminars and literature presentations are held every Thursday at 12:50 with the participation of all academic staff. Case reports are made when there are interesting cases. Hand Rehabilitation meeting is held every Wednesday at 13:00 in which the patients who are/will be taken for hand rehabilitation are evaluated together with the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department. Patients requiring a multidisciplinary approach are presented to the council by determining the meeting date and time with the related departments (Neurology, Neurosurgery, Rheumatology).

            After the research assistants start to work, they participate in all the courses and practices of the faculty members as a lecturer assistant during the first student internship. All academic staff regularly give lectures to research assistants during residency.

            Research assistants are encouraged to participate in national and international congresses, symposiums, online and face-to-face courses related to our field, and to make scientific research and publications. Research assistants who have received their specialization are encouraged to take the Turkish Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Board Examination.

            Research assistants are subjected to a written exam on lecturer courses and seminar subjects once a semester. In addition, every 6 months from the first 6 months of their specialization, they are evaluated in terms of commitment to duty, working ability, research ability, management ability and professional ethics, and these evaluations are recorded in the Specialization Training Tracking System (UETS) of the Ministry of Health.
