About the Faculty

The Süleyman Demirel University Faculty of Medicine (SDÜTF) was established on 15 April 1993 and admitted its first students in the 1993-1994 academic year. During its founding years, the Faculty operated for a time in part of the buildings taken over from Sümerbank and the Isparta Provincial Health Directorate; since 2002, it has been operating in its buildings completed on the East Campus. The Faculty began instruction with 37 students in the 1993-1994 academic year, and by the 2023-2024 academic year the total number of students had reached 1,597.

The Faculty comprises three main divisions: Basic Medical Sciences, Internal Medical Sciences and Surgical Medical Sciences. These divisions contain a total of 43 departments (anabilim dalı) - 10 in Basic Medical Sciences, 20 in Internal Medical Sciences and 13 in Surgical Medical Sciences - with 23 sub-departments (bilim dalı) operating under them. The academic staff of the Faculty consists of 738 members in total: 95 Professors, 52 Associate Professors, 46 Assistant Professors, 4 Lecturers and 541 Research Assistants. In addition, 40 administrative staff members serve at the Faculty.

The educational facilities of the Faculty include 3 lecture theatres, 14 classrooms, 18 laboratories, 2 professional skills training rooms, 1 simulated patient laboratory, 2 meeting halls, 4 student study halls and 1 student cafeteria.

The Süleyman Demirel University Faculty of Medicine applied for accreditation in 2010, and the application was accepted at the meeting of the National Medical Education Accreditation Board held on 15 January 2010. On 4 February 2010, the National Medical Education Board, chaired by Prof. Dr. İskender SAYEK, paid a consultancy visit to the Faculty. Following the submission of the self-evaluation report, that accreditation process was concluded. The accreditation process was restarted at the beginning of 2018; as a result of this application, the Faculty has been accredited as of 1 January 2019, and an interim evaluation was carried out in 2022.

The educational program of the Faculty is a system-based, outcome-based, horizontally and vertically integrated program oriented toward the priority health problems of society. Many different methods are applied at the Süleyman Demirel University Faculty of Medicine, including classical lectures, interactive training, small-group work, integrated sessions, laboratory practice and clinical skills training.

The University Research and Practice Hospital began providing outpatient services on 15 June 1994 and inpatient services with a capacity of 30 beds on 31 October 1994. The new 400-bed hospital on the Süleyman Demirel University East Campus, which came into service on 2 January 2001 as the SDU Health Research and Practice Center, has continued to meet the health needs of Isparta and the surrounding region. Developing steadily in both physical and technological terms, the hospital has now reached a capacity of 595 beds and, with its 33 clinical departments and its large and strong academic staff, provides health services with a commitment to the highest quality of care. Equipped with the latest technology of our age, the Süleyman Demirel University Research and Practice Hospital continues to serve with its quality of care and its academic staff, each specialized in their own field.
