HISTORY
The Department of Medical Biology was established in 1993 by Prof. Dr. Nurten ÖZÇELİK. In its early years the unit operated within the state hospital; in the 1997-1998 academic year it moved to the morphology building renovated from the former Sümerbank warehouses, and in April 2002 it moved to the Faculty of Medicine Morphology Building located on the Süleyman Demirel University Faculty of Medicine East Campus, where it remains today.
UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION
The Department of Medical Biology delivers theoretical and practical courses in Medical Biology and Genetics within departments of faculties and schools that provide education in the health field, primarily the Faculty of Medicine.
GRADUATE EDUCATION
The Department of Medical Biology offers formal thesis-based Master's and PhD programs within the Institute of Health Sciences. The minimum duration of study is 2 years for the Master's program and 4 years for the PhD program. Where necessary, students undergo a scientific preparation program before their studies begin, which is added to these durations. During these periods, students are expected to prepare seminars, participate in practical training, and take part in laboratory work, in addition to coursework and their thesis.
RESEARCH
One of the main objectives of the Department of Medical Biology is to conduct research and development activities. In the Cytogenetics, Molecular Biology, Cell Culture, and Western Blot laboratories, gene and protein expression studies, DNA damage analyses, and mutation and polymorphism analyses are carried out in research related to public health and various diseases.
