HISTORY
Süleyman Demirel University Faculty of Medicine, opened on 15 April 1993, began admitting students in the 1993-1994 academic year. Since that date, courses in History of Medicine and Deontology, and later History of Medicine and Ethics, have been taught by our department. With the appointment of Assist. Prof. Dr. Fuat İNCE on 3 September 2019, the department first continued its activities in the new classrooms area, then moved to its current location on the ground floor of the Deanship (Morphology) building.
EDUCATION
History of Medicine Education: In addition to teaching the foundations on which medical achievements rest and the stages through which medicine has progressed to the present day, the History of Medicine course aims to instill in students the habit of retrospective thinking. Considered almost an "introduction to medicine" course, it teaches how the practice of medicine has arrived at its present state and builds a bridge between the past and the present, making it possible to properly understand modern medicine and find solutions to its problems.
History of Medicine Courses: History Methodology and History of Medicine; History of Medicine and the Evolution of Medicine; Health, Disease, and Treatment in Ancient Civilizations (Chinese, Indian, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek, and Roman Medicine); Islamic Medicine; European Medicine and Its Development; Important Developments in 19th-Century Medicine; Important Characteristics of 20th-Century Medicine; Turkish Medicine in the Seljuk and Ottoman Periods; The Birth of Modern Turkish Medicine and the First Turkish Medical Schools; Turkish Medicine in the Republican Period; Inventions, Discoveries, and Findings that Shaped Medicine.
Ethics Education: Ethics education is necessary for medical students to recognize difficult situations and to approach problems in a principled and rational manner, and thus aims to instill ethical sensitivity in students. This is largely based on learning and professional practice; basic education, individual competence, and sociocultural background are among the other factors affecting this sensitivity. Medical ethics concerns what health professionals should do, and what they should avoid, in order to act well within the framework of medical relationships. Ethics education conducted through interaction with patients is more beneficial, and it is therefore important that this education be spread across the entire curriculum.
Ethics Courses: Ethical Concepts and Ethical Principles; Historical Development of Medical Ethics; Introduction to Medical Ethics; Principles of Medical Ethics - Medical Deontology Regulation; Declarations Related to Medical Ethics; European Convention on Biomedicine (first three chapters); European Convention on Biomedicine, Chapter 4 and Beyond; Legal Regulations Related to Medical Ethics; Legal Responsibility of the Physician; Patient Rights; Communication Skills in Medicine; Scientific Research Ethics and Ethical Rules; Professional Ethics Rules - Ethical Violations with Examples; Ethical Discussion Topics in Medicine; Related Topics in Integrated Sessions and Professional Skills Practice.
Special Study Modules: These are educational activities conducted alongside the core curriculum that strengthen the core program, giving students the opportunity to study in depth in areas of interest, instilling communication, time management, and a continuously questioning perspective, providing the opportunity to become closely acquainted with a chosen field for career orientation, and developing written and oral presentation skills. For instructors, they enable closer communication with students in small groups and the opportunity to try out new teaching methods. Our Special Study Modules: Deontology - Inventions, Discoveries, and Findings in Medicine (Year 2); Important Moments in the History of Medicine (Year 3).
Contribution to Interprofessional Applied Education: Contributions are made to the applied training in the education program within the scope of Interprofessional Applied Education, in cooperation with the relevant board for the effective use of educational environments and equipment. Interprofessional trainings contributed to: blood pressure measurement; venous blood sampling; preparing medication from ampoules and vials and administering IM injections; establishing intravenous access and intravenous injection.
Graduate Education: History of Health and Deontology (under the Public Health Department program of the Institute of Health Sciences).
