Pediatric Surgery


Children are not miniature adults.  Surgical diseases of children are similar to that of adults in terms of “name”, but they differ from diagnostic and therapeuticaspects. Therefore, the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric conditions that require surgery concern the “Pediatric Surgery” profession.  In this respect, Department of Pediatric Surgery has been established as a part of Surgical Sciences Department in 1997.

Education Facilities

A. Research Assistant Training

The research assistant training lasts 5 years. General Surgery (6 months), Anesthesiology and Reanimation (1 month), Neonatology (1 month), and Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (1 month) rotations are also performed in the meantime.Having completed their specialization education, 7 research assistants started to give service as pediatric surgeon in various parts of our country

B. Medical Student Training

Pediatric Surgery Training is given to medical students at Class 4.  Theorical lectures about main concepts of Pediatric Surgery, surgical diseases in children, and their diagnosis and treatment are given to medical students. Furthermore, practical applications are also performed at polyclinic, clinic, and surgery room.

Operations and Medical Services

Department of Pediatric Surgery performs the diagnosis and treatment of congenital or acquired surgical problems of neck, chest (lungs, respiratory tracks, and esophagus), abdominal cavity organs, inguinal region as well as urinary tract and genital organs of all children from birth to the age of 16. In addition, diagnostic and therapeutical endoscopic attempts (bronchoscopy) for children’s respiratory tract problems as well as certain operations are easily performed through laparoscopic method. Newborn surgery which requires extreme care and sensitivity is successfully performed in our hospital’s sophisticated operating theaters and newborn intensive care unit.

The most modern treatment methods in parallel to the developments in the world are applied in our clinic. An annual average of 1000 patients is provided polyclinic service. An annual average of 250 operations is performed. During this period, all the opportunities of the modern medicine are used taking the child’s physiological and psychological needs into consideration. All the children have the opportunity of staying with their mothers in rooms with private facilities. A majority of the operated patients are discharged the other day.
