HISTORY
The Department of Histology and Embryology was established in 1993 by Prof. Dr. Erdal KARAÖZ. One faculty member and 4 research assistants work in our department. To date, our department has graduated 4 specialists, 3 PhD holders, and 10 Master's degree holders.
LOCATION AND CAPACITY
In addition to the education block used by our faculty members, our department has two research laboratories — one Routine Research Laboratory and one Stem Cell Laboratory — as well as a student laboratory with a capacity of 60 people/microscopes.
RESEARCH ASSISTANT TRAINING PROCESS
Our department offers Master's (2 years), PhD (4 years), and Medical Specialization (3 years) training. Master's students take departmental courses and related courses outside the department for one year, while PhD students do so for two years, after which they carry out their thesis work. Graduate education is conducted according to the principles set out in the Regulations of the Institute of Health Sciences. Specialization students, within the framework of the rules set by the Turkish Society of Histology and Embryology and the Medical Specialization Training Regulation, take courses in their field for two years, and in their final years carry out their thesis work and complete their rotations. The training of residents is reinforced through seminars and article presentations held every Monday. Specialization students are required, and graduate students may optionally, to complete a 6-month rotation in the Assisted Reproductive Techniques (IVF) Laboratory of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Under the Erasmus/Socrates Programme, agreements are in place for the exchange of research assistants with Poland (University of Lublin), Germany (University of Leipzig), and Bulgaria (Sofia and Varna Universities). Outside the scope of Erasmus, faculty members and research assistants have also visited countries such as France and the United States for periods ranging from 3 months to one year, using either their own means or TÜBİTAK-supported projects.
FIELDS OF STUDY
Stem Cells; Reproductive Biology; Embryo and Tissue Culture; Toxicology; Immunohistochemistry.
FACILITIES
Histology and Embryology Routine Research Laboratory; Fluorescence Photomicroscope; Stem Cell and Tissue Culture Laboratory.
SERVICES PROVIDED
To date, our department has carried out the routine histological components and/or cell culture studies of various research projects and theses, mainly from the Faculty of Medicine, as well as from the Faculties of Dentistry, Engineering, Arts and Sciences, Fisheries, and Agriculture. After discussing the suitability of the subject to be studied and the current workload of the department, external studies continue to be accepted. Some of the services provided include: routine histological examinations; immunohistochemistry; immunofluorescence; cell and tissue culture; biocompatibility tests.
