History of Medicine and Ethics
HISTORY Süleyman Demirel University Faculty of Medicine, which was opened on April 15, 1993, started to accept students in the 1993-1994 academic year. Since then, History of Medicine and Deontology, and then History of Medicine and Ethics courses have been given by our department. On September 3, 2019, with the appointment of its Asst Prof Dr Fuat İNCE, the department first started to operate in the new classrooms area, then moved to its current location on the ground floor of the Dean's Office (Morphology) building. Education of History of Medicine With the education of history of medicine, it is aimed to give the students the habit of thinking retrospectively, as well as teaching the foundations of medical achievements and the stages of medicine that has come to this day. Lesson of the history of medicine, which can be thought of as an “introduction to medicine” lesson, teaches how medicine came to the present and builds a bridge between the past and the present. Thus, it is possible to adequately understand modern medicine and find solutions to its problems. Courses of the History of Medicine -History Methodology and the History of Medicine -The History of Medicine and the Evolution of Medicine -Health, Disease and Treatment in Ancient Civilizations (Chinese, Indian, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek and Roman medicine) -Medicine of Islam -European Medicine and Development of Its - Important Advances in Medicine in the XIX. Century - Important Features of the XX. Century’s Medicine -Turkish Medicine in the Seljuk and Ottoman Periods -The Birth of Modern Turkish Medicine and the First Turkish Schools of Medicine -Turkish Medicine in the Republican Era -The Creations, Discoveries and Inventions that Shaped Medicine Education of Ethics Ethics education is necessary for medical students to recognize difficult situations and to take a principled and rational approach to problems. Thus, it is aimed to provide students with ethical sensitivity. This is mainly based on learning and professional practices. Basic education, individual equipment and socio-cultural backgrounds can be listed as other factors that affect this special sensitivity. Medical ethics is about what health professionals should do and avoid in order to behave well within the framework of medical relationships. It is important that ethics education in interaction with the patient is more beneficial, and therefore this education should be organized in a way that spreads over the entire curriculum. Courses of Ethics - Ethical Concepts and Ethical Principles - Historical Development of Medical Ethics - Introduction to Medical Ethics - Medical Ethics Principles Medical Deontology Regulation - Declarations on Medical Ethics - European Convention on Biomedicine (first three chapters) - European Convention on Biomedicine Chapter 4 and Continuation - Legal Regulations Regarding Medical Ethics - Legal responsibility of the physician - Patient rights - Communication Skills in Medicine - Scientific Research Ethics and Ethical Rules - Ethical Violations with Examples of Code of Ethics - Ethical Discussion Topics in Medicine - Related topics in Integrated Session and Vocational Skills Practice Special Study Modules Special study modules, which are conducted alongside the core program, strengthen the core education program, give students the opportunity to study in depth in the fields of interest, provide a constantly questioning perspective in communication, time management, approach to medicine, focus on different areas of interest and choose a career closely. It is an educational activity that allows students to use and develop skills such as making written and oral presentations. In terms of educators, it provides the opportunity to communicate more closely and effectively with students in small groups, provides the opportunity to try and develop a new education method with a small group, and provides the opportunity to train educators who are not normally involved in the program by putting all the resources that can participate in the education into action. Our Special Study Modules -Deontology-Creations, Discoveries and Inventions in Medicine (Grade 2) -Important Moments in the History of Medicine (Grade 3) Contributed Trainings within the Scope of Interprofessional Applied Training Within the scope of Interprofessional Applied Education, it contributes to the applied trainings included in the training program. It works in cooperation with the committee formed within the organization necessary for the effective use of educational environments and educational equipment with applied trainings. Suggestions on applied training are presented to the relevant board.
