Location and Capacity

Department of Medical Pathology provides service in the laboratory located on the 2nd floor of the outpatient clinic building of the SDU Faculty of Medicine Research and Practice Hospital. The annual number of cases is around 20,000, including the total of cytology and biopsy.

Education Process of the Residents

The training period is 4 years. During the education process, research assistants receive daily macroscopy, microscopy preparation, systemic medical autopsy, frozen section training, and evaluate the cases under the microscope together with the faculty members. In addition, lectures, seminars, case presentations and article presentations are held alternately on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week during the academic year. It is also possible to participate in councils held jointly with clinical departments.

For residents, a faculty member is appointed as an educational consultant within the first 1-2 months after they start to work. Proficiency exams are held twice a year in the fields of basic and systemic pathology. In the second year of the education, a research topic is determined among the system pathologies that the advisor lecturer is interested in and given as a thesis.

Major Fields of Study

System pathologies are evaluated by faculty members as follows:

Nermin KARAHAN, M. D., Professor: Gastrointestinal system pathology, dermatopathology, oral pathology biopsy and cytological materials.

İbrahim Metin ÇİRİŞ, M. D., Professor: Head and neck pathology, endocrine system pathology, pancreatohepatobiliary system pathologies, nephropathology, neuropathology, bone and soft tissue pathology biopsy and cytological materials.

Şirin BAŞPINAR, M. D., Professor: Hematopathology, pulmonary pathology and pleural pathology, urogenital system pathology biopsy and cytological materials.

Kemal Kürşat BOZKURT, M. D., Associate Professor: Breast pathology, female genital system and peritoneal pathologies, molecular pathology biopsy and cytological materials.

Onur ERTUNÇ, M. D., Assistant Professor: Hematopathology, pulmonary pathology and pleural pathology, urogenital system pathology, molecular pathology biopsy and cytological materials.
