Biophysics

HİSTORY

Süleyman Demirel University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Biophysics  was founded in 2005 july  with the appoinment of  Prof. Dr. Mustafa NAZIROĞLU to the  chairman of  the Department, he is still in this position. In 2011 Assist. Prof. Dr. Abdulhadi Cihangir UĞUZ and Prof. Dr. Ömer ÇELİK were appointed to the department as lecturer. Medical Physics and Biophysics courses are lectured in Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry,  Faculty of Health Sciences Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation and Isparta Vocational School of Biomedical Technology Highschool and so it helps the education system. The Department of Biophysics Studies is one of the world’s femous groups focused on TRP channels and neurological diseases such as peripheral pain and epilepsy, comprising around 11 staff, including 1 Professor, 2 asistant professor 6 Ph.D or BSc students, and 2 technical scientists. These include leading academics with an expertise in the application of electrophysiology, apoptosis, oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, and calcium signaling in neuroscience. The department has been working on effects of cell phone (900 MHz and 1800 MHz) and Wi-Fi (2.45 GHz) in neuronal cells such as dorsall root ganglion and hipocampal neurons. The Department has extensive collaborative links with other centres worldwide such as Department of Biophysics, Science Faculty, Extramadura University, Badojoz, Spain, Department of Physiology, RWTH-Aachen Medical Faculty, Germany. The Department has received the highest possible rating in the Turkey and Suleyman Demirel University in the evaluation of research projects and publications and memmbers of the department have received femous international awars such as ‘Young Investigative Scientist Award, UC-Berkeley, USA, Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Research fellowship, RWTH-Aachen, Germany, Encouragement Award of Scientific and Tech. Res. Council (TUBITAK), Ankara, Turkey, Howard Hudges Medical Institute (USA)support,Khwarizmi International Award (Tehran, Iran). It currently holds approximately 200,000 Turkish Lira (About 100,000 USD) of research grant income per year, and has produced over 100 journal articles in the last 5 years.  In addition, members of the department have been biennially organizing an international congress entitled 'International Cell Membranes and Oxidative Congress:Focus on Calcium Signaling and TRP Channels' since 2006.

LOCATION AND CAPACITY

Department of Biophysics is in the Building of Basic Medical Science and have got three study rooms, one Electro-magnetic radiation room (5,40mx 2,80m x 2,80m,  cover of chrome-nickel), one student’s practise room and four investigate laboratories (Antioxidant System Laboratory, Cell Culture Laboratory, Calcium Signaling and Western Blot Laboratory and Patch Clamp Laboratory)

EDUCATION PERIOD OF RESEARCH ASSISTANT

In our department, Master Period is 2 years (one year is lecture and the rest is thesis) and Doctoral period is 4 years (2 years are lecture and the rest is thesis). Every tuesday and Wednesday lectures are given regularly to students.  Every week, we perform the general department meeting. Master and Phd Students present a seminar once a week . Our department’s students can go faculty of medicines in  USA, Germany, Spain, Italy, India, etc. for educational purposes. Foreign students also can come to our laboratory from abroad as a Phd. or Master student. Until 2021 we collaborate with Aachen Physiology Institute (Germany), Grenobla University (France), Extramadura University (Badojoz, Spain) via the ERASMUS student Changing Program and  every year we have been changing two  Ph.D.students.
